Effects of reminiscence therapy on psychosocial outcome for people with dementia : A Literature review

Reminiscence is a psychosocial intervention that is commonly used in dementia treatment. This paper is aimed to review of the concept of reminiscence in dementia and describes about its uses as a therapeutic intervention used on person with dementia. Reminiscence is defined as the process of thinking or telling someone about past experiences, events or activities that are personally significant. The terms reminiscence and life review are often used interchangeably but are different in their goals, theory base, approach, content, client role, et al. Overall, recent studies was found that suggests that people with dementia, who are experiencing depressive symptoms, may benefit from reminiscence therapy. Reminiscence can lead to positive mental health, enhanced self-esteem and improved communication-social skills. More
research is needed on who benefits most from reminiscence intervention, and better designed trials so that more robust conclusions may be drawn.
